Happy Jesslyn To You
4th October - the day this little girl has been waiting for all year. The grandness of the day fills her with such joy, she came back from school (where she indulged in the spotlight of being a Birthday Girl all day among her friends), literally jumped in the presence of all who were there for the celebration.
I can't remember what it must've felt like - will it be equivalent to winning the lottery? Or getting a queue number <10 when you apply for HDB flat?
See pictured dresser box her dad gave her, which she delightfully painted and decorated "from 9am to about 2pm in between only stopping for lunch" (as quoted when asked). She got a puzzle, some stickers and a Mighty World's florist shop from me. She gets to eat the cream of her cake with fingers and no one would scold her.
But the best part was seeing her breaming with pride when everyone sings her the birthday song :)

Recycling for Fun
We made a toy house for Saffi and she instantly knew what to do with it - wriggles through, sticks her head out of places, reaches her little paws out to play catch. She would soon snooze in it, too.
It was the box of a Kenwood Steamer my mom gave me.

The Elusive Red Dot
So cute.
Poor Saffi... never could catch the dot.
Oh maybe we shouldn't let her play with The Dot so much. 20 minutes after the chase, she's still looking for it! I read somewhere that it could be frustrating for cats when they're unable to catch their prey - in this case a toy - so using a conventional mouse/fish tease could be better?

Coffee, Anyone?
There's been some coffee brewing at home since the acquisition of a Nespresso machine. The machine came with a set of 16 capsules to sample, and I've decided on some favourites: Strong and spicy Indriya; Arpeggio, Cappricio, Volluto and Cosi from the Espresso range; Fortissio for the Lungo; the 3 decafs are good enough to stock up too, for an after dinner treat.
Apart from the fact that this small, quiet gadget makes good coffee, it's cost efficient at 5x cuppa to 1x Starbucks (machine aside). Maintenance is easy, you need only to fill its water tank like you would to make coffee - hit a button and run water through without a capsule in.
I'm also pleased with drinking more milk now that I enjoy these lattes and cappucinos. Still trying to make a prettier cappuccino. Pictured here is the Magimix Citiz & Milk White. See the Citiz range here.

The Fox In The Snow
Fox in the snow, where do you go
To find something you can eat?
Cause the word out on the street is you are starving
Don't let yourself grow hungry now
Don't let yourself grow cold
Fox in the snow
Girl in the snow, where will you go
To find someone that will do?
To tell someone all the truth before it kills you
They listen to your crazy laugh
Before you hang a right
And disappear from sight
What do they know anyway?
You'll read it in a book
What do they know anyway?
You'll read it in a book tonight
Boy on the bike, what are you like
As you cycle round the town?
You're going up, you're going down
You're going nowhere
It's not as if they're paying you
It's not as if it's fun
At least not anymore
When your legs are black and blue
It's time to take a break
When your legs are black and blue
It's time to take a holiday
Kid in the snow, way to go
It only happens once a year
It only happens once a lifetime
Make the most of it
Second just to being born
Second to dying to
What else could you do?
Fox in the snow...

The Cat's Big Move
We've moved from Loyang. After all week stressed up over packing and moving the final task was to bring the cat over. After an enjoyable car ride, Saffi officially became one of the new residents at Lavender, 3am on 1st July. She went all hiding at first, as predicted. Occasionally sticking her head out to see what we're doing. By next day, curiosity got the better of her and she explored the place in short intervals. Come day two, she's quite happy walking and lounging about with her tail high.
Without the company of Elliot and Oscar, Saffi sticks with us - an escort in and out of rooms, sitting by while we have tea, do the laundry, work at the desk, watch tv, etc. She's also started the habit of waking people up in the morning. Talks a lot too.
She's cautious of the neighbours but she'd now peer out. And as usual, she comes to the door like a puppy when the key jiggles at our door.

New Home, Family Visit
On the first Sunday at the new dwelling members of my family came to visit. Plus some random shots. More photos will be up soon!
Hanuta: Juxtaposed
Well known German wafer (with rich chocolate and hazlenuts sandwiched) made by Ferrero. The surprise made my day.

Paper Bags and Laundry Bins
Who needs overpriced toys from the stores when you can have loads more fun with paper bags? (Tip: cut holes and watch your cat turn into a bag with limbs!)
I Love You, Mom!
A small impromptu lunch affair on the Saturday afternoon before I was to leave for a trip. See how animated the little niece is.

Ashes in Sunny Skies
You can't see it, neither can you smell it. But with a computed 1% danger to aircraft engines the skies were shut for 6 days. Almost a week of peace and quiet for those dwellers near airports, even birds could be heard chirping and bunnies seen hopping (across the runway, mind you).
The big eruption happened on the 14th April. Like most, I went to bed that evening in London thinking I'd be home soon only to wake up on the morning of 15th seeing images of an angry volcano on BBC. Flights subsequently got cancelled. Over the days that followed, air spaces and airports remained closed as airlines, passengers and crew waited for news every hour. It's fortunate at times like these we've got comfortable accommodation provided by the company, but to be told you've got a flight to operate and then none, then again, and changed the next minute... this fly/no-fly non status is just tedious. Everything just became one big ash cloud of uncertainty and I got bored. I wanted to come home and see my cat.
The nature of my job is anything but routine. It's hard to make plans months, weeks even days ahead as it is with your availability all depending on the ever-changing Duty Roster - unpredictable events like these make things all the more vulnerable. Not just the weather or traffic that concerns what time you'll be home in the evenings, we're at the mercy of many factors that'll affect getting home at all. Back home to see your folks, to water the plants, to lie in your own bed, to have a hearty meal... to make sure everything's alright. People complain all the time of mundane chores, of not getting away. Well then my job is full of surprises and being away. Volatile it may seem but it can also be great fun, I must admit.
So... after what should've been just a 9-day trip turned 17 days, having flown across continents - back and forth and then stuck - I'm home. I like being home when I am... heck I even enjoy the mundane chores. The feeling of belonging is important. Like my cat, home is a constant. For all it's worth, that's what I need when the flying's done.

All That USS Visits
I've had the pleasure of visiting Singapore's very own Universal Studios at Sentosa three times so far, once every month since January. Here are photologs of the three occassions:
January. We had to wear vests and helmets. We also took the most pictures then.
February, on day two of Chinese New Year, with family. No rides, but that suited us just fine!
And finally in March, soon after it's opened. We're too busy this time taking the rides and persuading each other to do it so not many pictures were taken. Also, we spent half the day in wet clothes, thanks to the water ride at 'Jurassic Park'.

I Deent Feel Gud After Seeing EvilVet
One after noon I got the usual annoying brush and ear-cleaning at hom, playd around unsuspaktingly with me carrier, and found myself in my person's car next. She also made me wate alone meeowing outside the door becoz ever so absent minded she went back in to get someting important. It luked like a booklet wif my recorts.
We enjoied the long car ride with my person singing badly and telling me I'm going to get a niice pat and a candee at a place I wud remember. I wanted to count the numba of tall treez along the way. Little did I know I was to be taken to the Evil Vet at Sunset Way and feel quite sickly after.
That's me waitin for my turn outside the damnedClinic Animall Hell. It was nerfracking and I tried to cover my face pretend I'm somwhere els, but I'm kaypoh consernd and needed to look around. A companying me was a curious maltese, a huge goldie and a pretty mongrel. I could relate to the poor british blue gettin examind in the EvilVet's room.
The ordeel happend like a dreem I waz given the poizonus vassine and a tablett. Evil Vet said I way 3.65kg, have long whiskers, teeth okay, am sweet natured mwahaha blah blah and I cant wate to scoot off to get som sleep. But my wocally challenged person first made me wait at the cofeeshop while she hapeely chomped down a chicken cutlet.
When we got back I had the chanz to check out the surrounding from atop the car. It waz nice to see how the noizy birds luk like up cloze!
The next 24 hours I felt seek and confused seemed like ages as I recover. I culdnt eat a scrap of food, dint want to play, just lying in my bed dazed and woondered what I deed to deserve such a bad day. My person had the cheek to treem my nailz at the apportunity.
I vakely remember I had visitors, tink I saw Elliot and Oscar observing from the door. A somewhat sympatetik looking Oscar sat looking for a loong time, and later gave in to walk over and eat my food. That's what frenzs are fore, be there when you cant.
